We are pleased and excited to announce that Newhaven Yacht Squadron was one of the successful applicants of the recent Bass Coast Shire Phillip Island Community Benefit Fund Grant round.
NYS received $25,000 toward the purchase of three Hansa 303 Wide dinghies. These three dinghies will complete our desired fleet of four Hansas – and having our four dinghies will greatly enhance our Sailability program.
Our Sailability program has been hosting organisations that cater for clients with special needs. These include the Bass Coast and Leongatha Specialist Schools; SCOPE, San Remo; Yooralla, Leongatha; and Interchange, Wonthaggi.
Since its inception in 2014, our Sailability program has involved club member volunteers taking participants out in their yachts and motor boats as passive crew members. The Hansas will provide our participants with the opportunity to be ‘real’ sailors, and not just sit passively on a big boat. They can be modified to enable a range of ability levels to participate. Regardless of impairment, they will allow the participants to actively participate, and to progress their sailing skills to their potential, whether that be for pleasure or participating in competition sailing. A number of the participants demonstrate ability to be able to sail (and skipper) the two-seated Hansa dinghies sitting alongside an experienced sailor; and some will definitely be ultimately able to sail one solo.
The Hansas will also value-add to our Discover Sailing Days, and will improve our opportunity to attract new people to sailing – particularly young people. The simplicity and unsinkability of the Hansas will ensure first-time participants, irregardless of age, experience a positive and successful sailing episode that will motivate enduring enthusiasm, whilst they are still capable of exciting and extending the experienced and proficient sailor.
NYS would like to thank the Bass Coast Shire for the opportunity to enhance our boating facilities and, in turn, what we can offer the Bass Coast community.
