Boating at NYS

Newhaven Yacht Squadron has a wide range of boating classes and activities including keel boats, trailer sailers and dinghies, motor and angling boats, as well as a Sailability program designed for people with disabilities.

Sailing

Newhaven Yacht Squadron has a diversified fleet of keel boats, trailer sailers and dinghies. Please refer to the Forthcoming Events section for our imminent racing programs. We also conduct cruising events, not only within Westernport but also to popular destinations like Refuge Cove at Wilsons Promontory.

Motor Boat & Angling

Newhaven Yacht Squadron has a large motor boat membership. We run a year round fishing competition that runs from May to May, concluding on the afternoon of Presentation Night. We run a number of fun events for those members whose preference is not fishing. We have run rallies and cruises around both French and Phillip Island.

Sailability

The Sailability program focuses on introductory and recreational sailing programs designed for people with disability and is now conducted at sailing clubs throughout Australia. The program is not just about opportunities for people with a disability, it extends to people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, indigenous Australians, those who are financially and socially disadvantaged, and other groups within our community not traditionally attracted to sailing.

NYS Emergency Response Guidelines

CALL FOR ASSISTANCE FROM A MEMBER:

– For non-urgent matters try to arrange assistance from another member.

– Sanctioning the use of the Club Boat by a ‘Licensed Operator’ will need to be obtained from the Flag Officers (Rear Commodore, in the first instance). Phone numbers are in the Quarterly magazine. Alen Garrett and/or Peter Gratton will generally be available to operate the Club Boat.

CALL FOR EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE:

ALL MARINE RESCUES IN VICTORIAN WATERS ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE VICTORIAN WATER POLICE – Call 000

It is not expected that the Water Police will call upon a Club Boat, as rescue boats are now required to be in survey and skippered by Coxswains.
